Instructions for Downloading Tableau

Note: If you have problems installing Tableau, please contact Lorin Bruckner BEFORE the workshop or class you are participating in. There will not be time to install the software during your workshop or class.

If you are a STUDENT:

  1. Go to https://www.tableau.com/academic/students
  2. Click on “GET TABLEAU FOR FREE”
  3. Complete and submit the form provided with the same information your school has on file.
  4. You should recieve an email with a product key.
  5. Visit https://www.tableau.com/products/desktop
  6. Click the Start a Free Trial button
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen to download and install Tableau.
  8. Launch Tableau.
  9. In the window that pops up, click on Acivate Product Key.
  10. Copy and paste the product key from your email and click the Activate button.
  11. Fill out and submit any registration forms if prompted.

If you are an INSTRUCTOR or using Tableau for NON-PROFIT RESEARCH:

  1. Go to https://www.tableau.com/academic/teaching
  2. Click on “REQUEST INDIVIDUAL LICENSE”
  3. Complete and submit the form provided. It may take several days for your application to be reviewed.
  4. If accepted, you should recieve an email with a product key.
  5. Visit https://www.tableau.com/products/desktop
  6. Click the Start a Free Trial button
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen to download and install Tableau.
  8. Launch Tableau.
  9. In the window that pops up, click on Acivate Product Key.
  10. Copy and paste the product key from your email and click the Activate button.
  11. Fill out and submit any registration forms if prompted.

If you are NOT a student, instructor or non-profit researcher:

  1. Go to https://public.tableau.com/
  2. In the top left, roll over the Create menu and select Download Tableau Desktop Public Edition.
  3. Click on “DOWNLOAD TABLEAU PUBLIC”
  4. Fill out the form and click on “DOWNLOAD THE APP”
  5. You should automatically be prompted to download a file. Save it to your computer.
  6. After downloading the file, double click on it and follow the instructions to install Tableau.

To save or publish your work, you will need a Tableau Public Profile. Follow the instructions below to create one.

  1. Go to https://public.tableau.com/
  2. In the upper right corner, click on Sign In.
  3. At the bottom of the form, click on “CREATE AN ACCOUNT”
  4. Fill out the form and click on “CREATE MY ACCOUNT”
